Technical SEO FAQ · Indexing, Canonicalization & Duplicate Content

How do you determine why an important page isn't indexed?

Use a layered diagnosis:

  1. Does the URL return 200?
  2. Is crawling allowed?
  3. Is there a noindex directive?
  4. Is the page canonicalized elsewhere?
  5. Is it discoverable through internal links or sitemap?
  6. Is the content substantially unique?
  7. Does Search Console classify it as crawled/discovered but not indexed?
  8. Is Google selecting another canonical?
  9. Is the page newly published and simply awaiting processing?

Do not assume "not indexed" means a technical error. Google evaluates pages for suitability for the index after crawling.
