What Is a Redirect Chain?

A redirect chain is a sequence of two or more redirects a single URL passes through before reaching its final destination, wasting crawl budget and losing link value at each hop.

Redirect chains commonly accumulate silently over multiple migrations — a URL redirected in 2021 gets redirected again in 2023, and nobody flattens the chain in between.
