What Is a Canonical Tag?

A canonical tag is an HTML element that tells search engines which URL is the preferred, master version among a group of duplicate or near-duplicate pages.

Canonical tags are a strong hint, not a directive — Google can and does choose a different canonical than the one specified when other signals (internal links, redirects) disagree with it.
