What Is an XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a structured file listing a site's URLs in a standardized format, submitted to help search engines discover content more efficiently.

A sitemap is a hint, not a guarantee — including a URL doesn't force indexing, and excluding low-value URLs from it is a common, effective crawl-budget tactic on large sites.
