What Is an AI Overview?
An AI Overview is an AI-generated summary that Google displays at the top of search results for certain queries, citing sources drawn from multiple web pages.
Pages cited in AI Overviews tend to already rank well organically and answer the query directly near the top of the page — there's no separate optimization track from strong traditional SEO. At Google I/O 2026, Google merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one unified flow, so the same citation now carries through into deeper conversational follow-up rather than staying confined to one static box. *(updated Sept 2026)*
